How do I mark pages for deletion?
After uploading your PDF, all pages are displayed as thumbnail previews in a grid. Click on any thumbnail to mark it for deletion — a red X overlay will appear on the selected page. The page is not deleted yet at this point — it is only marked. Click the thumbnail again to unmark it if you change your mind. Once you are satisfied with your selection, click "Delete Pages" to generate the new PDF with only the unmarked (kept) pages. The visual marking system makes it easy to review your choices before committing.
What happens if I accidentally mark the wrong page for deletion?
You can unmark any page before clicking "Delete Pages" — simply click the thumbnail again to remove the red X marking. The marking is completely non-destructive at this stage; no changes are made to the PDF until you explicitly click the delete button. You can also reload the page or re-upload the PDF to start fresh. Because PurePDF operates locally on your device, your original PDF file is never altered — only the downloaded output reflects your deletions.
Can I delete multiple pages at once?
Yes. You can mark as many pages as you like for deletion before clicking the Delete button. Simply click each page you want to remove — each will show a red X overlay. There is no limit to how many pages you can mark. The only restriction is that you cannot delete all pages — at least one page must remain in the document. If you attempt to delete all pages, the tool will warn you and require you to unmark at least one page before proceeding.
Does deleting pages affect the quality of the remaining pages?
PurePDF re-renders the kept pages as raster images to assemble the new PDF. This means the remaining pages will look visually identical to the originals at normal viewing sizes, but they will be embedded as JPEG images rather than preserving the original vector, text, and metadata content. The default render quality ensures the pages are clear and sharp. If you need to delete pages while fully preserving the original PDF structure — including selectable text, embedded fonts, and interactive elements — a desktop PDF editor is required.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server during page deletion?
No. Everything happens in your browser. The original PDF is loaded into local memory using PDF.js, which renders all pages as thumbnails for your review. When you click Delete Pages, only the kept pages are re-rendered to canvas and packaged into a new PDF using pdf-lib — no network requests involving your file data are made at any point. This means you can safely use this tool for confidential documents, legal filings, personal records, and any PDF whose content should remain private.
Can I delete pages from a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. PurePDF requires an unlocked PDF to render pages and perform deletions. If you upload a password-protected PDF, the browser will not be able to parse and display the pages, and the deletion tool will not function. To delete pages from a protected PDF, first remove the password using PurePDF's Encrypt PDF tool or a third-party utility, then upload the unlocked version. After completing the page deletion, you can re-apply password protection to the cleaned output using the Encrypt PDF tool.
What is the difference between deleting pages and splitting a PDF?
Deleting pages removes specific pages and keeps all remaining pages together as a single output PDF. Splitting a PDF divides the document into multiple separate files, one per page or range. Use Delete Pages when your goal is to clean up a document by removing unwanted content while preserving everything else in one file — for example, removing a cover page, blank pages, or a confidential appendix. Use the Splitter when your goal is to divide a document into separate parts for distribution or individual use.
How does PurePDF ensure I don't accidentally delete the wrong pages?
PurePDF uses a visual thumbnail-based workflow specifically to reduce accidental deletions. Each page is rendered as a preview thumbnail so you can see the actual content before marking it. Marked pages show a clear red X overlay making them easy to identify. You can zoom in on any thumbnail for a closer look. The deletion is only applied when you explicitly click "Delete Pages" — there is no auto-save or immediate deletion. You can mark, unmark, and review as many times as you need before committing.
Will the page numbering update after deletion?
In the output PDF, page numbering within the file's internal structure is renumbered sequentially starting from 1. However, printed page numbers that are part of the document's visual content — such as headers or footers with page numbers — are images baked into each page and will retain their original printed values. For example, if you delete pages 1–3 and your document has footer page numbers, the first page of the output PDF may visually show "4" in the footer even though it is now the first internal page.
Is the Delete PDF Pages tool suitable for legal or regulated documents?
PurePDF is a practical tool for removing pages during document preparation and review, but there are important considerations for regulated environments. The output PDF is a rasterized version — it does not contain the original vector, text, or metadata structure, which may be required for legal admissibility in some jurisdictions. Document authenticity tracking, audit trails, and digital signatures are not preserved. For documents requiring legal integrity or chain-of-custody, consult your organization's compliance guidelines and consider using a certified PDF management system.
