Can I rotate individual pages to different angles?
Yes. Each page has its own ↺ (rotate left 90°) and ↻ (rotate right 90°) buttons. You can set a completely different rotation for each page independently. For example, you could rotate page 1 by 90°, leave pages 2–5 unchanged, and rotate page 6 by 180°. The current rotation angle for each page is shown as a badge on its thumbnail, making it easy to review all rotations before saving. There is no limit to the combination of rotations across pages.
How do I rotate all pages in a PDF at the same time?
The toolbar contains "All ↺" and "All ↻" buttons that apply a 90° rotation to every page in the document simultaneously. This is useful when a batch-scanned document was fed in the wrong orientation — all pages end up upside down or rotated 90°. Clicking "All ↻" or "All ↺" once fixes all pages in a single action. You can then fine-tune individual pages if any came through at a different angle using the per-page rotation buttons.
Does rotating a PDF preserve text selectability?
PurePDF rotates pages by re-rendering them as raster images at the new orientation. This means the rotated output is an image-based PDF where text is no longer natively selectable or searchable. The visual appearance is preserved exactly — the page looks correct in any PDF viewer. If maintaining the original PDF structure with selectable text is important (for example, for legal documents or searchable archives), you should use a tool that applies native rotation transforms to the PDF page dictionary without re-rendering, such as Adobe Acrobat or PDFsam.
Can I rotate to any angle, or only 90-degree increments?
PurePDF supports 90° increments — 90°, 180°, and 270° — which covers all the standard orientation fixes needed for scanned or mis-oriented documents. Clicking the ↻ button once rotates 90° clockwise; clicking it again rotates another 90° for a total of 180°; three clicks give 270° (equivalent to 90° counter-clockwise). Free rotation to arbitrary angles is not supported, as PDF page content is designed to align with right-angle grid orientations.
Why would a PDF need to have its pages rotated?
There are several common reasons a PDF ends up with incorrectly oriented pages. Scanning a physical document in the wrong direction is the most frequent cause — flatbed scanners may default to landscape when you load a portrait document, or a multi-page document may have some pages fed upside down. Some PDF export tools also set incorrect rotation metadata. Mobile scans using document scanner apps sometimes capture pages in landscape if the phone was held sideways. Are my PDF files uploaded to a server when rotating?
No. Rotation is performed entirely within your browser. PurePDF uses PDF.js to render each page at its new orientation to a canvas element, then assembles the rotated pages into a new PDF using pdf-lib — completely locally, with no network transmission of your file data. This approach is private by design. Your documents, whether personal, corporate, or confidential, never leave your device during the rotation process. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and rotation will still work.
Does rotating a PDF affect its file size?
Yes — rotated PDFs from PurePDF are typically larger than the original because the rasterization process converts vector-based content (text, graphics) into JPEG image layers. For already-scanned PDFs (which are already image-based), the size difference is relatively small. For text-based or vector-heavy PDFs, the size increase can be substantial because JPEG-encoded raster images are less space-efficient than native PDF vector content. If file size is a concern after rotation, use PurePDF's Compress PDF tool on the rotated output.
Can I rotate pages in a scanned PDF?
Yes. Scanned PDFs — which contain raster images as page content — work exactly the same as any other PDF in PurePDF. PDF.js renders each page including the embedded scan image, and the canvas is captured at the new rotation angle. The output looks exactly like the page correctly oriented on screen. Scanned pages are particularly common use cases for rotation since physical documents are the most frequent source of orientation errors when digitized.
Will the rotation be permanent in the saved PDF?
Yes. The downloaded PDF contains pages rendered at their new orientations — when opened in any PDF viewer (Adobe Reader, Preview, Chrome, etc.) the pages will display at the corrected orientation without requiring any additional viewer settings. The rotation is baked into the image layer of each page rather than being a viewer preference flag, so it will be consistent across all PDF readers. There is no way to "undo" the rotation after downloading — if you need to reverse it, re-upload the file and rotate again.
What should I do if only one page in a large PDF needs rotating?
Simply upload the entire PDF, locate the incorrectly oriented page in the thumbnail grid, and click the rotation button for that single page only. Leave all other pages unchanged. When you click Save PDF, only the targeted page will be rendered at the new orientation while all others are processed at their original orientations. The result is a complete PDF with only the necessary page corrected. This is much more convenient than splitting the file, rotating the page, and merging it back together.
